What the AI Is Actually Doing
Modern background removal uses a computer vision technique called semantic segmentation — the model has been trained on large sets of labeled images to recognize what a "subject" looks like (a person, a product, an animal) versus what's background. It draws a pixel-level boundary around the subject based on edges, color contrast, and learned patterns of what different objects look like. This is why it handles genuinely difficult cases — individual hair strands, semi-transparent fabric — much better than older tools that just looked for color contrast (like the classic "magic wand" selection).
When It Actually Struggles
Low contrast between subject and background is still the main failure case — a white product on a near-white background confuses most models. Very fine, wispy detail (loose hair, fur against a busy background) can still get slightly rough edges even with modern AI. And reflective or transparent objects — glass, clear plastic — remain genuinely hard, since there's no clear "edge" for the model to detect. Getting a Cleaner Result
